Math Monkey’s curriculum is based on the mathematical techniques of Vedic Math . Vedic Mathematics is the collective name given to a set of sixteen ( 16 ) sutras ( or formulas ) stemming from the Vedic period from 1500 to 800 B.C. These sutras were originally written in Sanskrit and are build on the foundations of rigorous logic, thereby helping to guide and hone the human mind into approaches of logical reasoning. By mastering these sutras, student s are given numerous ways to work out a problem and many problems can be easily worked out mentally and quickly.

The sixteen sutras of Vedic Math are given in word form such as “By one more than the one before” or “Vertically and Crosswise”. They describe ways of using the mind, thereby giving direction to the mind, enabling the mind to solve mathematical problems from arithmetic to algebra to geometry to calculus and beyond. The most striking feature of the Vedic system is its coherence. The whole system is interrelated and unified, making math easy and enjoyable. The simplicity of Vedic Math means that answers can be obtained in one line or even mentally, encouraging innovation among its students. Bharati Krisna Trithai, who rediscovered the methods by dissecting the Vedic texts between 1911 and 1918, sub-titled his work “For One-line Answers to all Mathematical Problems.”

Through mental work, students progress faster in terms of mental agility, capacity to hold ideas in the mind and to remember past impressions, as well as developing flexibility on their methods of tackling problems including evolving their own strategies to meet new challenges. This mental development helps considerably in other academic areas as well as personal growth and self esteem. Mathematical constructs are mental entities constructed by the mind, so a system based on these natural mental functions is bound to be most efficient and pleasant to use.
